You find a tear in your tarp.
There is a roll of duct tape in the toolbox.
Do you use it?
For a quick emergency fix, perhaps. But duct tape and dedicated tarp repair tape are not necessarily designed for the same job.
Understanding the difference can help you choose a more suitable repair – particularly for boat covers and tarps that remain outdoors for long periods.
Isn't all strong tape basically the same?
No.
Tape is a combination of backing material and adhesive, and both are selected according to what the tape is intended to do.
General-purpose duct tape is useful for hundreds of temporary jobs. That versatility is exactly why most of us keep a roll nearby.
Tarp repair tape has a more specific purpose: bonding to flexible tarp and cover materials to repair holes, tears and worn areas.
Why does width matter?
A tear doesn't only need to be covered.
The repair also needs sufficient bonding area around the damaged material.
A narrow strip of tape places the repair close to the damaged edge. A wider tape allows the adhesive to extend further onto sound material.
Hippo Marine Heavy-Duty Tarp Repair Tape is 100 mm / 4 inches wide, giving a substantial bonding area around a tear.
Waterproof repairs outdoors
Boat covers and outdoor tarps face conditions that an indoor repair does not.
Rain, moisture, temperature changes, sunlight, wind and repeated movement all place demands on both the tape and adhesive.
For a tarp that will remain outdoors, a waterproof repair tape designed for outdoor use is therefore a more purpose-specific choice than general household tape.
The tarp material matters too
Tarps and covers can be manufactured from PE, PVC, vinyl and numerous synthetic materials.
A tape that sticks extremely well to one surface may perform differently on another.
Hippo Marine 1250 is intended for common tarp and cover materials including PE, PVC, vinyl and many synthetic fabrics.
Whatever tape you use, always start with a clean and dry surface.
When is duct tape useful?
Duct tape still deserves its place in the toolbox.
If something tears while you are travelling, camping or working and duct tape is all you have available, a temporary repair may be considerably better than allowing the damage to continue spreading.
The distinction is really about purpose.
Emergency temporary repair: use what you have available.
Planned outdoor tarp repair: use a tape designed for the material and conditions whenever possible.
What about large tears?
Tape cannot rescue every tarp.
If the surrounding material is badly degraded, brittle or heavily damaged, the adhesive may have very little sound material to bond to.
For larger but otherwise repairable tears, reinforcing both sides can help distribute the load over a larger area.

Repair isn't the same as prevention
If damage repeatedly occurs in the same place, the tape may not be the real issue.
Chafing against fittings, sharp corners and heavily loaded grommets can eventually damage even a good tarp.

Choose the tape for the job
Duct tape is one of the most useful things to have in a toolbox.
But being useful for many jobs doesn't necessarily make it the most appropriate tape for every job.
When repairing an outdoor tarp or boat cover, look for a tape designed for tarp materials, outdoor exposure and the size of repair you need to make.
Hippo Marine Heavy-Duty Tarp Repair Tape 1250 is waterproof, 100 mm / 4" wide and supplied on a 5 m / 16 ft roll for repairing holes, tears and worn areas.

FAQ
Can I use duct tape to repair a tarp?
Duct tape can be useful for temporary repairs, but a dedicated tarp repair tape is designed specifically for repairing flexible tarp and cover materials.
What is the main difference between duct tape and tarp repair tape?
General-purpose duct tape is designed for many different temporary applications, while tarp repair tape is intended specifically for bonding to tarp and cover materials and withstanding outdoor use.
Is wider tape better for repairing a tarp?
Width can be an advantage because it provides more bonding area around a tear. The repair should extend onto strong, undamaged material.
Can tarp repair tape be used on a boat cover?
Yes, provided the tape is suitable for the cover material. Hippo Marine 1250 is intended for PE, PVC, vinyl and many synthetic tarp and cover materials.
